As I said before, the first Fantasy book I ever remember reading was Roger Zelazny's wonderful "Nine Princes in Amber". I read it more than once. Much more than once. The copy I asked Mr. Zelazny to sign when I met him at the Northern California Octocon in 1980 was so worn and battered he laughed "Well, I guess I don't have to ask if you bought this copy just to have something for me to sign." When I confessed that was my third copy, he sat right down on the hood of the car and talked with my son and I for about half an hour. He was a wonderful, witty, intelligent and interesting man. He is greatly missed. Later that evening, after a round table discussion, he asked me to show the book to Larry Niven. He seemed to get a great kick out of it and said he always liked signing autographs when it was obvious the owner had read the work. Never has a dog-eared, yellowed, frayed paperback been so cherished. I now keep it sealed in a zip-lock baggie. I am now on the sixth copy and I still find something new every time I read it (and the entire Amber series). |
