The Fire Opal

Deep in the Taka Mal desert, priestess Ginger-Sun carries the power of the shape mages. Whispers abound: is she descended from the beloved Sunset Goddess? Or are her nighttime rituals filled with evil? Ginger herself is uncertain, until an exotic stranger is left for dead at her feet.
Then her magic begins to burn.
By choosing to help the stranger, Ginger entwines herself in events beyond her control. Or so she believes. When pushed to the  brink, she learns that her magic can summon unfathomable powers. But unless Ginger masters her dark powers, violence will reign in Taka Mal… and in her soul.
from Luna Books, July 2007

what reviewers are saying:

"Once again, Asaro skillfully blends romance with a solid fantasy scenario." Publishers Weekly

"Fans of the Aronsdale books and new readers alike will not be disappointed with Asaro's latest. Even with no prior knowledge of the series, this is one heck of a page- turner! Ginger is tough yet innocent, and the reader can't help but root for her to succeed. The writing is crisp, the plot and action are compelling and the sweet ending will completely satisfy everyone. This is an excellent read!"

Welcome to my redesigned website!

A few things have changed (besides the background color). For ease of viewing, I have created three separate pages for the different types of stories - science fiction, fantasy, and near-future suspense. Most of the stories are full-length novels, but there are also a few novellas and short stories.
I've also added a new feature - "Ask Catherine." This is where you help me make this site interesting by asking questions. I plan to answer a new question each month. So please, send in your questions.
My next appearance will be on Saturday, October 13 at Capclave 2007. I hope to see you there!

Coming Attractions:

Alpha (from Baen Books) will be released in paperback in December 2007.

The latest in the Skolian Empire series, The Ruby Dice, is slated for release in January 2008. (Also from Baen Books.)

Catch the Lightning was recently re-released in mass market paperback by Tor.

Analog Magazine just contracted to publish my latest short story, "The Spacetime Pool." More details to follow...

Currently, I am working on the next book in the Lost Continent series for Luna Books. This one features a heroine from Aronsdale plunged into the turmoil of the barbaric culture of Jazid.
