HOME

Welcome to my home on the Web! Here you will find notes on past, present, and future publications, links to my farm's website, and a daily journal of Life Among the Lipizzans.

As I write this, I'm a new kid on the block. My first novel, The Mountain's Call, will be published by Harlequin Luna in September of 2004. I am of course very excited and a little bit scared. What will readers think? Will they like my books? Will they enjoy traveling through my world?

Of course, as a writer, I'm already working years ahead. Right now I'm completing the second volume of the series, Song of Unmaking, which Luna will publish next year. They've also bought a third volume, as yet untitled, and I hope there will be many more.

These books are very near and dear to my heart. I've always been taught, as a writer, to "write what you know," and what I know is horses. Especially Lipizzan horses.

These are the Dancing White Horses of Vienna, famed for their Airs Above the Ground. There are at most 3500 of them in the world, about 1000 of which live in the United States (and at this writing, six of them live here with me). The breed is old--dating back to the end of the sixteenth century--and carefully bred to be the parade mounts, battle companions, and coach horses of kings. For the past two hundred years they have been bred specifically for the work of the "High School"--the highest art of horsemanship. They are a rare and magical breed, highly intelligent and remarkably gifted. When I thought about writing a new fantasy series, I turned naturally to these horses for inspiration. I've had to do remarkably little to make them "fantastic." Just writing them as they are, quite often, has been enough.

So again, welcome, and feel free to wander at will through the site. If you have any questions or comments, please do get in touch. And above all--enjoy the ride!
