June 2007 • Behind the Masks

New site design, new links: as summer begins, what better time to ramble through the rich tradition of the masked avenger?

The Deep Woods: the Phantom's Home on the Internet

Among the very first of the modern masked heroes was the Ghost Who Walks, also known as the Phantom (whose adventures continue even today).  He's also one of the most popular, with a large world-wide fan base; this site provides a wide-ranging reference guide to both the character and the fandom.

Doctor Syn: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh

A good site devoted to one of the more obscure -- but highly intriguing -- masked swashbuckler/heroes out of literary and movie folklore.  Like his better-known Californian counterpart, Zorro (see below), Dr. Syn is wholly a character of fiction, but Syn is in many ways a considerably more complicated character.

Robin Hood: Bold Outlaw

An excellent resource for those interested in the famous archer of Sherwood Forest -- both the historical and legendary figure and the many literary, cinematic, and television retellings of his adventures.

Zorro

The official Web site for all things Zorro, operated by the company holding the trademarks to the character, with material on the numerous film, TV, and literary interpretations of the character (including links to a new futuristic animated series now in development).
